Climate change and pollen allergy - Allergo Journal Article 2/2012

Cities and municipalities should take people suffering from pollen allergy into account when planting in public spaces

Summary

Climate change leads to changes in pollen flight. Thepollen of hazelnut, alder and birch in particular tendto appear earlier and in higher concentrations. This trend is promoted by the planting of birch trees in town.

Until now, there have been no recommendations in Germany regarding the new planting of trees in public spaces that takes the needs of people suffering from pollen allergy into account. In order to prevent the further increase of allergenic tree pollen in cities, a proposal listing tree species that municipalities should avoid planting is presented. Also attached is a list of allergologically safe trees that are suitable for cultivation.
